Being one the UK’s top architecture Universities, studying
at the Manchester School of Architecture would be an extreme honour and utter privilege.
Students come out with such a high calibre of education from the teaching, it’s
hard to not want to follow in their footsteps so I can myself, thrive, learn,
and hopefully become a fully qualified architect at the end of the journey. The
idea that the school is a combination of both Manchester Universities really
appeals to me, as this means the resources of both knowledge and equipment
overshadows many other similar institutions.
This summer, I spent two weeks in and around the city of
Venice. The architecture of the entire city left me in awe; from the grandeur
of the Doge’s palace, to the quaint little back alleys. Every detail seemed to
be constructed to such perfect detail. I hate use clichés, but the absolute centrepiece
for me, was the San Marco Basilica, in St. Mark’s square. The Byzantium influenced
church was the Doge’s own, therefore it held such a grip in the eyes of the
Venetians, it became identifiable as
Venetian fortune. Construction was completed around 1903, however there have been
many additions, alterations and repairs since then. The thing that amazed me
the most was the attention to detail at such a large scale, everything down to
the last tile has been beautifully carved and painted to such a high quality.
Ken Yeang is possibly
my favourite modern architect. Yeang is a pioneer in ‘eco-architecture’, his
designs, such as the Solaris Tower and the Spire edge tower have paved the way
for a new way of thinking, by focusing on nature and sustainability in the
design of the building. With climate change becoming an ever increasing issue,
I believe creating sustainable and ‘eco’ buildings is key for a sustainable
future. Yeang has been a key figure in leading the way in which modern
architecture should be heading.
In the future, I would love to one day visit and experience the
Empire State Building for myself. It’s such an iconic building, being the heart
and soul of the Big Apple. It has a very distinctive art deco style, which has
led it to become one of America’s biggest cultural and tourist attractions. In
my opinion, any building with such cultural and social impact as the Empire State
Building, is a must for
a visit.
Here I discussed my love for three very different types of architecture.
I believe architectural diversity is extremely important to create a culturally
rich and sustainable world. I would love the opportunity to study at MSA, so I
can further my learning and experience more of what architecture has to offer.
